Plot

It's Christmas Eve, and Herr Stahlbaum and his wife are hosting a party. Clara and Fritz, their children, greet the guests, and there is dancing, dining and holiday merriment. Things get interesting when the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer arrives, bringing a wooden nutcracker toy for Clara.

Once the clock strikes midnight, The Nutcracker turns into a fairytale. Clara awakes to find her room filled with giant mice. The Nutcracker and his army of life-sized toy soldiers save her, and then, in true fairytale fashion, the toy Nutcracker turns into a handsome prince. During Act II, the prince takes Clara on a journey to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy greets them with a night of dancing and entertainment.

The director of the Russian Imperial Theatres commissioned Tchaikovsky's score for The Nutcracker after the success of "Sleeping Beauty." However, when the ballet was first performed in 1882 in St. Petersburg, it received a poor reception. It is difficult to believe that such a well-loved ballet, a ballet that friends and family attend year after year as a holiday tradition, could have ever received a poor reception. Still, it wasn't until the 1960s that The Nutcracker began enjoying widespread popularity. In the United States, American ballet companies make nearly 40 percent of their annual ticket revenue from holiday productions of The Nutcracker.

Cast

The English National Ballet's production of The Nutcracker features collaborations that seek to honour, but add to, traditional ballet. Wayne Eagling is in charge of the choreography. Peter Framer handles design, and David Richardson is in charge of lighting. The English National orchestra will be playing the timeless music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The Libretto for The Nutcracker is adapted from an 1816 story by E.T.A. Hoffmann called "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King." In 1844, French author Alexandre Dumas, best known for "The Three Musketeers," wrote a revision of the Hoffmann tale. When Russian composer Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov adapted the story into a ballet, they based their work on Dumas' version of the Christmas tale.

The English National Ballet was founded in 1950 and is considered one of the best in the world. Tamara Rojo is the artistic director, while Farooq Chaudhry handles all the production duties.
