The Naked and Famous Tickets
Based in Auckland, New Zealand, The Naked and Famous are best described as creating a mix of electronica and indie music. The band was put together in 2007 and is made up of Alisa Xayalith, on vocals and keyboards, as well as Thom Powers, a vocalist and guitarist, plus Aaron Short, another keyboard player. David Beadle and Jesse Wood make up the rhythm section on bass and drums respectively. The group also included Ben Knapp and Jordan Clark in the past. Sometimes classified as producing a post-punk revival sound, or nu-new wave, the Naked and Famous are led by Xayalith, who is of Laotian heritage. Born in 1986, she was instructed in the folk music of Laos by her father. She and Powers got together initially to record with one another, but the idea of a live performing band soon took hold. The Naked and Famous: new music and tour
While studying at the MAINZ musical college in Auckland, Xayalith and Powers began working on what would become the band's first two EPs. They recruited Short as a producer initially and he went on to become a full member. The first of the band's two EPs was named This Machine and it was picked up by the Round Trip Mars label. Released in 2008 on CD and via digital download, it went on to be put out by the Somewhat Damaged label in the UK, the US, Japan and Germany in 2011. Featuring six tracks, the mini album was critically well received but failed to chart.
The other recording Xayalith, Powers and Short had been working on as students also came out as an EP in 2008. No Light was unleashed on the public in September of that year and featured Knapp's engineering work on some of the tracks. The band then began to perform in New Zealand, with Knapp and Clark forming the group's rhythm section.
By 2009, the aforementioned lineup changes had occurred and the Naked and Famous were busy recording their debut album. In June 2010, the group released their much-lauded single, “Young Blood”, which got to number one in New Zealand and sold well in the UK and US. It also won the Silver Scroll Award for 'Song of the Year'. The album from which it was taken, Passive Me, Aggressive You, came out a couple of months later. It was a hit in several territories, including the UK, Australia and Germany, thereby cementing the Naked and Famous as a serious recording act. The band subsequently relocated to Los Angeles and has recorded In Rolling Waves, a hit in the US, plus Simple Forms of 2016, which spawned three single releases.
