Based on the 1992 blockbuster that elevated Whitney Houston to superstar status, The Bodyguard musical blends romance, drama and action. The musical features Whitney's hits from the best-selling soundtrack including the Academy Award nominated songs "I Will Run to You" and "I Have Nothing," as well as the smash hit single "I Will Always Love You." The soundtrack is full of recognizable hits from both the film and Houston's career in general. Those with The Bodyguard Westcliff-on-Sea tickets will witness a critically acclaimed musical that was nominated for a Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Musical in 2013 and has travelled around the world since its West End premiere in 2012.
The Bodyguard follows Rachel Marron, a pop superstar who starts to receive death threats. After an attempt on her life, Marron hires Frank Farmer, an ex-Secret Service agent who immediately irritates Rachel with invasive protection methods. However, Frank soon shows that he is a valuable asset after he rescues Rachel from a near-riot at one of her concerts and the two start to bond. As the superstar and her bodyguard slowly start to put their differences aside, they find themselves in danger as Rachel experiences another threat on her life from a dangerous stalker. Frank and Rachel continue to grow closer as the stalker remains one step behind, willing to do anything to get to Rachel and her family.
After touring the UK since its premiere, the production and its all-star cast has settled in Westcliff-on-Sea, where the show performs on both weekdays and weekends. The Bodyguard is often staged twice a day on performance days.
The Bodyguard includes Whitney Houston's original songs from the film's original soundtrack, as well as several other Houston hits.
