Wistful Psychedelia: Teleman
Teleman has been electrifying audiences and critics, drawing comparisons to both Alt-J and The Beach Boys. Their recordings are exceptionally well-produced, but nothing compares to seeing this talented group live.
Teleman is playing a handful of dates in continental Europe, including a show at Paris' historic and beautiful venue Le Bataclan and dates in Hamburg, Brussels, and the town of Nijmegen in The Netherlands. They'll return to the United Kingdom, with performances at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club, Manchester's Manchester Gorilla, and Birmingham's Hare & Hound. They have a couple of shows in Bristol, a picturesque show at Oldham's Oldham Library, and a hometown concert at London's Heaven.
One unexpected source of inspiration is Johnny Cash. The Sanders' dad didn't know much about music but he did have Cash records around, so the kids listened to them a lot growing up.
Teleman's roots began with the Reading-based indie band Pete and the Pirates. The brothers Jonny and Thomas Sanders were the core of the group; they grew up playing music together and, in their late teens, made the jump to forming their own band. With Thomas on vocals and Jonny on drums, they added two guitarists and a bass player. Pete and the Pirates were active from 2004 until 2012, even getting some radio play in the year before their breakup.
Teleman were formed after the collapse of Pete and the Pirates. The Sanders brothers, now based in London, regrouped with Teleman and announced themselves to the world with their debut single in January 2013. Peter Cattermoul, who was the bass player of Pete and the Pirates, returned as the bassist for Teleman. As a trio, Thomas sings and plays guitar while Jonny plays drums.
Teleman was an immediate success. The members are seasoned musicians, and they knew exactly what they wanted to do with their new band. Moshi Moshi Records has given their music a great deal of publicity, and critics have responded with praise. Their music has been described as "wistful psychedelia" by Clash Magazine and "ineffable pop songs" by The Guardian. They play major venues all over the UK and Europe.
Teleman's debut single, "Cristina", was put out by the Moshi Moshi Singles Club in January 2013. It was simultaneously released as a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl pressing and made available on Moshi Moshi's Soundcloud, where it has received hundreds of thousands of plays. The band's success immediately followed this initial release, which received great write-ups all over the music press and at general interest papers such as The Guardian. Their first full-length album, Breakfast, was released (also on Moshi Moshi) in May 2014. It's a highly polished effort years in the making; the album boosted the band's visibility and has received much positive critical response.
Teleman provides an ecstatic mix of dreamy vocals, visceral electronics, fun guitar riffs and upbeat drums. Their songs are easy to dance to and their catchy melodies encourage you to sing along. With their accessible, layered music, they have a knack for moving between beautiful, iconic venues and smaller, grittier clubs. Their brand of indie-rock dance-pop guarantees a fun show for everyone with Teleman tickets.
