Cohen and Emm were friends long before they were in a band together. Although they had collaborated previously on a song for Cohen's own band, Professor Murder, and worked so well together that they thought they should try creating music on their own. Their combination worked, and they have since played with bands like The xx, Vampire Weekend and Yeasayer.
Eric Emm and Jesse Cohen formed their band, Tanlines, in 2008. Both had previous experience working in the music industry, and after collaborating on a song for Cohen's band, Professor Murder, the two decided they should try their hand at creating music together. It worked, and the band released their first EP in March of 2010. The music did well, and they toured Europe, gaining notoriety. They have since released two more records, including an LP called "Highlights," in 2015, and the band is frequently asked to collaborate with other famous artists, like Health, Delorean and Rick Ross.
The band's first EP, "Settings," attracted the attention of music critics and fans alike. The popular music magazine Pitchfork even wrote about the album, which helped make the duo even more popular. After releasing their record, they then went on a European tour, which gained the attention of indie pop music fans worldwide.
"Settings" got Emm and Cohen plenty of attention from both fans and critics. However, their second release and first full length album, "Mixed Emotions," was the album that received the most critical acclaim. The record came out in 2012, and the album charted at No. 2 on the Heatseekers chart and No. 8 on the Dance/Electronic charts. One song on the album, "All of Me," was called by Rolling Stone Magazine the 43rd best song of the year when it was released.
