Sunflower Bean Tickets
Originally from Brooklyn in New York, Sunflower Bean is an American rock group that first got going in 2013. Julia Cumming plays bass for the band and provides lead vocals. Jacob Faber provides percussion and Nick Kivlen is the band’s lead guitarist and backing singer. The group performs in a variety of sub-genres, including indie rock, alternative rock and psychedelia. Throughout the band’s back catalogue, the distinct influence of punk rock music is to be found, as well. The three-piece has been signed to the Fat Possum Records label, based in Oxford, Mississippi, since 2015.
Sunflower Bean's early years
Kivlen and Faber provided the backbone of Sunflower Bean, having been rehearsing with one another as a duo for a time before the band got going. In fact, the pair had already performed with one another when they were part of another rock band named Turnip King. Cumming was recruited, having already made a name for herself playing for a band called Supercute, which featured the well-known Rachel Trachtenburg. After adding the final member of the trio to the group, Sunflower Bean went on to work on their original material and were soon being booked to play gigs in and around their home city. In 2014, the band played a total of eight shows in a one-off, four-day period, cementing their reputation as a hard-working outfit.
Sunflower Bean's later career
It was in the autumn of 2014 that Sunflower Bean’s first release was made. Eagerly anticipated by those who had seen the band live, the EP was called Rock 'n' Roll Heathen. This was soon followed up by another EP in the early part of 2015; a work given the name Show Me Your Seven Secrets. Both EPs were made available for digital download via the group’s Bandcamp profile. Show Me Your Seven Secrets got Sunflower Bean noticed further afield. In the UK, the New Musical Express described the EP as ‘astonishing’ and heaped praise on tracks such as “2013” and “Tame Impala”.
At this time in their career, the members of Sunflower Bean toured North America, often acting in a support capacity for a higher profile act. Opening slots followed for groups such as Wolf Alice, the Vaccines and Best Coast. The trio then went on to tour in the UK for the first time. By November 2015, the members of Sunflower Bean were ready to put out their debut single; a track named “Wall Watcher”. Promoting their forthcoming album, the song's production was praised by several music critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Early in 2016, Human Ceremony, the band’s debut LP, came out. For a highly accomplished work, the album took a remarkably short time to record – only 11 days, according to the band.
