Sugaray's musical journey
Caron "Sugaray" Rayford was born and raised in Smith County, Texas, where he began his musical career at the tender age of 7 playing drums and singing in his local church. Indeed, Rayford's music continues to reflect this gospel influence, and a deep, soulful husk in his voice conveys emotions experienced through hardship. Sugaray's single mother raised him and his two brothers whilst battling cancer, a time of great poverty and loss for the family. When she died, the boys were raised by their grandmother, who took them to church every day, instilling gospel and soul music deep into their hearts. A shift in musical focus came with a move to San Diego, California, where he joined R&B/Funk outfit Urban Gypsies as lead vocalist. Here, he shared the stage with many distinguished acts, such as Average White Band, Dennis Quaid and Venice. Rayford left Urban Gypsies after falling in love with the blues and never looked back. Success came with Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz, which released two albums and took second place at 2006's International Blues Challenge, where they represented San Diego. Sugaray's solo career flourished when he moved to Los Angeles as more success followed. An array of musical influences throughout his career make Sugaray Rayford a versatile, exciting and one-of-a-kind performer unmissable for any blues fan.
