Spandau Ballet Biography - The Soul Boys of the Western World
The seeds of Spandau Ballet were sown in Islington in the mid-1970s, when teenage guitarists Gary Kemp and Steve Norman began spending their lunchtimes jamming. The two friends discussed their dreams of forming a band and started performing under the name The Cut, enlisting the talent of fellow musicians Tony Hadley, John Keeble and Gary's younger brother Martin to complete the outfit.
The group changed their name to Spandau Ballet and set about crafting a distinct sound, marrying elements of blue-eyed soul with power pop and guitar-driven synth rock. Hadley's smooth, Sinatra-esque vocal power propelled the act to the top of the charts in 1983, when their album True became one of the biggest selling LPs of the decade. A clear reaction to the uniformity and austerity of punk music, tracks like 'Gold' and 'True' were a lavish antidote to songs about unemployment and urban decay.
They released danceable rhythms that young people were crying out for, propelling a night club revolution and influencing a string of classic 1980s bands including Culture Club and Duran Duran. Instantly iconic for their wondrous fantasy-inspired fashion, dramatic makeup and high hair styles, the group set the trend for frilly shirts, buccaneer boots and breeches that soon spread across the world.
This legendary band are still going strong and have enjoyed even more career highlights in recent years. In 2012, principal songwriter Gary Kemp won a prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection. In 2014, the band made a welcome return to the public sphere with their documentary film Soul Boys of the Western World.
