Countless domestic trophies
Founded in 1936, FC Shakhtar Donetsk lifted their first major trophy, the USSR Cup, in 1961 and successfully defended the competition a year later. The club regularly competed for the USSR Championship title throughout the following two decades and in 1984 reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup. FC Shakhtar Donetsk's dominant streak started when they joined the Ukrainian League in the mid-90s following their homeland's breakaway from Russia. After winning three Ukrainian Cups they lifted their first ever league title in 2002, pipping FC Dynamo Kyiv by just a single point. It would be the first of many, with the team being crowned champions a further four times in the '00s alone, while in 2009 they became the first Ukraine club to lift Europe's second biggest trophy when they beat SV Werder Bremen in the final. FC Shakhtar Donetsk continued to dominate throughout the next decade, becoming Champions League regulars in the process. A nomadic top flight team
FC Shakhtar Donetsk have had a rather nomadic existence since becoming an independent Ukrainian club in the mid-'90s. After leaving their home of nearly 70 years, the Shakhtar Stadium in Donetsk, in 2003, the team played at the RSC Olimpiyskiy, the Donbass Arena and the Arena Lyiv before settling at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv in 2017. The multi-use stadium, which hosted several games at the 2012 European Championships, boasts a capacity of just over 40,000 and is situated 150 miles to the north of Donetsk. The team share the stadium with lower league side FC Metalist 1925 Kharkiv who only formed in 2016. Several Ukraine internationals have called the stadium their home including defender Bohdan Butko, midfielder Taras Stepanenko and goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov. But the modern-day FC Shakhtar Donetsk have welcomed just as many Brazilians into their side, with no less than nine players from the South American nation featuring in their 2018-19 squad. If you haven't yet experienced the highly charged atmosphere of the Metalist Stadium, then take a look at the various FC Shakhtar Donetsk tickets on offer at StubHub.
