The musician's early influences and his band
Sergio Mendes's journey to becoming one of Brazil's most famous artists had many ups and downs. Although he became known for his unique jazz and rock style, Mendes originally aspired to become a classical pianist. However, he quickly abandoned this aspiration after the bossa nova craze hit Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s, opening his eyes to a completely different style of music. Surrounded by other big names in Brazilian music, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto, the singer gathered several other young musicians and began his own band, initially called Brasil '65 and later renamed Brasil '66. The band consisted of Mendes on keyboards, Jose Soares on percussion, João Palma on drums, Bob Matthews on bass, and Lani Hall and Janis Hansen on vocals and became known for their mix of jazz, soft pop, and bossa nova. The group eventually rose to national fame, yielding hits including "Mas Que Nada," "For Me," "Night and Day," and "Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)." The band would even come to cover popular songs by The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel. Mendes's modern comeback sweeps the world
The pop singer's success would expand beyond the borders of his home country of Brazil over the following decades, earning him particular recognition in the United States. At the turn of the century, Mendes was recording music with his new group Brasil '99 and later, Brasil 2000. After taking an eight-year hiatus, his entire backlog of music was released in addition to his album Timeless. More importantly, he went on to record music with several other prominent artists, including John Legend and Will.i.am. His 2008 album Encanto included guest songs from artists will.i.am and the Black Eyed Peas. Finally, in 2014, he recorded "One Nation," with fellow Brazilian artist Carlinhos Brown.
