British Sea Power: critically acclaimed indie act
Fans just can't get enough of the lusciously layered post punk nuances produced by critically acclaimed indie rock band British Sea Power. Emerging in the early 2000s, the sensational sextet have acquired a strong fan base and are often categorised alongside other acts from the indie rock revival scene, although they have more in common with 1980s alternative acts like The Cure and Joy Division.
Experimental albums such as Do You Like Rock Music? and Machineries of Joy have helped them cement their position as a truly offbeat act while latest record Let the Dancers Inherit the Party was released to almost universal critical acclaim. British Sea Power: indie rockers not afraid to go orchestral
Cumbrian outfit British Sea Power formed at the dawn of the millennium when brothers Yan and Hamilton decided to try and turn their dreams of making a career in music into reality. Enlisting the instrumental talent of several university classmates, the band began practicing and before long moved to the seaside town of Brighton to make their name on the burgeoning indie rock scene.
Their absorbing live shows helped them acquire a keen following, and the group became known for their visually lavish performances, where members of the group would don matching military jackets and shred their guitars to a backdrop of huge stuffed birds. Their unique persona helped them win a lucrative deal with cult label Rough Trade Records in 2001 and they released their illustrious debut album The Decline of British Sea Power to widespread critical acclaim in 2003. The album spawned a string of Top 40 singles, including "The Lonely" and "Carrion".
More than a decade and a half after their creation, British Sea Power are still going strong and manage to attract new fans with every release. Their 2013 album Machineries of Joy soared into the UK Top 20 and their soundtrack to the feature film From the Sea to the Land and Beyond garnered flawless reviews from music publications in 2013. Sixth album Sea of Brass followed in 2015, before critically acclaimed effort Let the Dancers Inherit the Party delighted fans once again in 2017.
