Based on the hit 2003 movie, School of Rock is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that chronicles the tale of Dewey Finn, a down-and-out rock musician. He needs an income, so he pretends to be a substitute teacher at a prestigious preparatory school. Amazed at the musical talent displayed by his students, he forms a secret band comprised of his fifth-graders and enters them into a Battle of the Bands contest. Julian M. Fellowes (Downton Abbey) wrote the book, and Glenn Slater wrote the lyrics. Laurence Connor is the original director, and JoAnn M. Hunter is the choreographer. Anna Louizos is the costume and set designer, and Hugh Vanstone is the lighting director. Rocket Wady has directed some of the shows. The musical's announcement was published in 2014, and it debuted in 2015 on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre. Before its opening in December, there were staged concerts at Gramercy Park in June. The School of Rock performance premiered at the West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in November in 2016. The School of Rock schedule has included many locations since, such as the Kravis Center Dreyfoos Hall in West Palm Beach. The musical follows the movie pretty closely but diverges on a few points. Dewey Finn is romantically interested in the rigidly uptight headmistress but receives no encouragement in that quarter at least initially. Webber wanted more of a story involving the lives of the young school prodigies, so there is more background material on their personal stories. There are also 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber besides all the original songs. The musical was first shown on Broadway rather than the West End because of various differences in local child talent and child labor laws, but the West End debut happened soon after. The point of School of Rock is still the same, which is to embrace the "message of rock!"Back to TopEpic events and incredible deals straight to your inbox.
