An American-born entertainer, comic writer, academic and actor, Ruby Wax has made much of her career in the UK, working with the likes of Jennifer Saunders. Born in 1953 in Illinois, she first established herself on the alternative comedy circuit that burst onto the scene in the early 1980s. Married to Ed Bye, a British television producer known for his comedy shows, Wax was classically trained as an actress in Glasgow after moving to the UK. Her television breakthrough came in 1985, when she co-wrote and starred in the alternative situation comedy Girls on Top, alongside Saunders and her comic partner, Dawn French.
Ruby Wax's acting career
The daughter of Jewish immigrants to the United States, who had fled persecution in the run-up to the Second World War, Wax had a successful school career and went on to study at Berkeley at the University of California, where she majored in psychology. Wax then began her acting career at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, before landing roles in productions at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. At this time, she began working with Alan Rickman, who directed her in plays, and later, comedy shows. She went on to join the Royal Shakespeare Company and began winning roles in TV shows, such as The Professionals. Wax also appeared in a few movies around this time, including Omen III: the Final Conflict.
Ruby Wax's comedy and TV career
After the success of Girls on Top, Wax had made her name as a comic writer and performer. She subsequently won a chat show on Channel 4 called Don’t Miss Wax and also presented a radio show. In the early 1990s, the BBC offered Wax a number of TV formats to show off her comedy skills, including The Full Wax and Ruby Wax Meets.... Her style was personable, often offering viewers a unique glimpse of celebrity life. She was nominated for a BAFTA in 1997 for her television work. In 2001, Wax took on the role of hosting a quiz show for the BBC, while still making appearances in support of the television-based fundraising event, Comic Relief.
Ruby Wax's advocacy work
Although Wax has written extensively and made TV shows for the Dutch market, she has continued to perform and to act in the role of a public speaker. She is a long-time advocate of mental health awareness in the UK and the US, and speaks on the subject regularly. Her 2013 book, Sane New World, was a bestseller. In 2015, the comedian was awarded an OBE, largely due to her work in the field of mental health advocacy.
