Roy Harper Biography - Free-Spirited Folk Favourite

This masterful singer-songwriter grew up in Manchester, absorbing himself in poetry and classical music throughout his childhood before becoming obsessed with the music of legendary American blues artist Woody Guthrie. After spending years busking around the world, he returned to London in 1965 to became the resident singer at the famous Soho folk club in Les Cousins, where he rubbed shoulders with folk luminaries like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell.

His 1966 debut album Sophisticated Beggar became an instant classic, with dark and deeply personal songs like 'Committed' and 'Big Fat Silver Aeroplane' inspiring countless artists over the decades. Unfazed by convention, he went on to record more unique blues-tinged folk music at the famous Abbey Road Studios, producing seminal albums like Flat Baroque and Berserk in 1970. His terrific song-writing has attracted the admiration of superstar artists like Led Zeppelin, leading to stints singing lead vocals for Pink Floyd on their song 'Have a Cigar'.
