Like many artists on the urban music scene, this Los Angeles native first made his name behind the scenes, writing songs for a range of top artists in the late '90s and early '00s. Although eventually launching a performance career over the following years, it was his songwriting for other artists that remained his most successful venture as his own releases scored only moderate success. However, the tide started to turn in 2005 when he signed to the Neptunes' label Star Trek, beginning a long-standing collaborative relationship with music mogul and pop megastar Pharrell Williams. Putting out his second single for the label, 'Lost Without U', in 2006, he soon had a huge radio hit on his hands which also crossed over to the UK, hitting Number 11 on our shores. From here the collaborations came thick and fast, getting bigger and better with every release. Working with the likes of Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj endeared him to the urban crowd, while a tour with Jennifer Hudson proved his breakout moment as a live performer. Signed up as a judge on a US talent show in 2012, his rise to the top was sealed with 'Blurred Lines', which hit the Number One spot on charts across the world.
