At the peak of Take That’s popularity, Robbie Williams gained the reputation of the most extroverted of the group, getting a reputation as the practical joker of the band. Unfortunately, Williams soon acquired both an alcohol and drug habit, with his musical direction differing greatly with the rest of the band, needless to say, Williams’ time in the band soon began to spiral. In 1995 Williams left the band to pursue a solo career, and in the process became a huge talking point for much of the media!

Considering the obscenely high amount, the contract came with a number of provisos, with the label giving more creative control to Williams while committing themselves to breaking the pop star into the US market. Standing as the biggest music deal in British history, Robbie Williams quickly went back to work, spending an entire year recording his fifth album! However, these were William’s first songs to be created without collaborative efforts from former writing partner Guy Chambers!
