Richard Herring Tickets

Born in 1967, Richard Herring is a well-known British stand-up comedian who once worked as part of a double act with Stewart Lee. The comedy writer, performer and podcaster is originally from Pocklington in Yorkshire. He was educated at St Catherine’s College at Oxford University and he has been a regular on the comedy circuit since the late 1980s. Herring makes frequent contributions to comedy panel shows, both on television and the radio.

Herring made his name as one-half of the duo Lee and Herring but focused on writing towards the end of this renowned double act. As a result, four plays were written by the comedian in the immediate aftermath of the two splitting up. Soon afterwards, however, Herring returned to comedy and he began to pen what would become a situation comedy for TV. Time Gentlemen Please ran for two series. Starring Herring and Al Murray, famous for his pub landlord character, it was broadcast on Sky One and included Phil Daniels, Rebecca Front and Julia Sawalha in the supporting cast.

After the show was decommissioned, Herring returned to stand-up comedy. He embarked on several high-concept comedy tours of the UK, including a number of one-off appearances. Herring frequently experimented with his often-confrontational style of humour at the fringe of the annual Edinburgh Festival. The comedian has taken to the stage there on at least 11 consecutive occasions. His Edinburgh performances have been put together for a DVD that includes many of his best routines over the years.

On radio, Herring has written and performed in several shows, such as That Was Then, This is Now. He was also brought in by the makers of the TV sketch show Little Britain to act in the capacity of the programme’s script editor. From 2005, Herring began hosting a chat show with poker players and a number of famous faces, which dealt with issues in the card game. More recently, the stand-up has made contributions to Andrew Collins’ show on BBC 6Music. Herring has made comedy podcasts with Collins, and Collins’ Radio 4 show, Banter, also featured Herring on multiple occasions.

In 2010, Herring made an appearance on the BBC1 show, Have I Got News For You, a feat he repeated in the following series in 2011. Around this time, Herring also wrote a new show for radio, called Richard Herring’s Objective, a programme that was well received in many quarters of the press. The comedian came second in the 2010 edition of Celebrity Mastermind, scoring 34 points in the final.
