Regina Spektor: multi-talented star at the peak of her powers

Born in the old Soviet Union and taught classical piano from the age of six, Spektor initially looked to make it a career as a professional pianist. However, after her family emigrated to the United States to escape anti-Semitic persecution, her classical training was disrupted and she found herself on a new path to becoming a singer-songwriter. By the early 2000s, she was penning her own songs, going on to release three records including 11:11 independently. Before long, her spellbinding live performances ensured she had made a name for herself in the indie and anti-folk scene of New York's East Village - a hotbed of musical innovation and the former home of iconic punk venue CBGB.

A commercial breakthrough came with Begin to Hope and the huge hits "Fidelity" and "On the Radio". The success of this gold-certified record propelled her fifth and sixth albums, Far and What We Saw From the Cheap Seats, each to number three on the US Billboard Chart. More recently, Spektor made news for being one of the artists to feature on The Hamilton Mixtape, singing a remix of "Dear Theodosia" with Ben Folds!
