The wide variety of pastimes available in this sprawling park
The Recreation Ground lies right alongside the River Avon, in a picturesque part of Bath. It's part of a large area of parkland and buildings that has been dedicated for the public use of residents since the 1890s. It was immediately used for local sports games, and a wide range of games could be played and watched every weekend, including lawn tennis, archery, and of course, football and cricket. A part of the grounds area is taken up by the Sulis Club Cricket Ground, which is often the venue that people mean when they're talking about the Rec. Besides hosting rugby games, it was also the home of Somerset County Cricket Club until the early 2010s, its 14,500 capacity in a flat structured stadium providing perfect sports viewing for spectators. The stadium hosted its debut first-class cricket match here in 1897, a historic international match between Somerset and the Gentlemen of Philadelphia, a cricket team from the US. Other leisure activities here have included ice skating and amateur dramatics, which have taken place in adjacent buildings. In the case of dramatics, theatre lovers can still enjoy productions here. For these and all the other entertainments, you can get Recreation Ground tickets here.
The place to go for the Bath Festival
The Recreation Ground has also welcomed many thousands of music lovers to the live music festivals that have been held year down the years. A big drawcard in the new millennium has been the Bath Festival, which has attracted big name headline bands in the past, like UB40, Billy Ocean and Van Morrison. Festival-goers from all over the UK and further abroad in Europe have made annual pilgrimages to the festival, which has always offered a mix of light indie music combined with the eclectic range of headliners, as sampled above. If you're a music lover, it's events like these to keep an eye out for, and then get your Recreation Ground tickets on StubHub.
