Princess Nokia Tickets
Born in 1992, Destiny Nicole Frasqueri is better known to music fans around the world under her stage name of Princess Nokia. The American rapper has also performed with the monikers of Wavy Spice and Destiny, before settling on her more regal name. Active as a hip-hop and R 'n' B artist in her own right since 2010, Princess Nokia is also a member of the New York hip-hop collective, Ratking, which has performed with the likes of Run the Jewels and Earl Sweatshirt.
Princess Nokia has described herself as being obsessed by individualism and the ability to express herself in her own way. Raised in the Spanish Harlem area of New York as well as the city's Lower East Side, the rapper's style draws on her own ideas about the creativity of the city as well as her love for the excitement it generates.
Princess Nokia's career milestones
Princess Nokia's first foray into recorded music came in 2010 when she put out a track entitled “Destiny”. Using her Wavy Spice name, she uploaded it to SoundCloud, the online music-sharing platform. Later, she would also upload it to her YouTube channel. The song began to gather greater interest as the burgeoning rapping career of the performer began to take off. Her autobiographical style of lyric writing continued when Princess Nokia released “Bitch I'm Posh” as a follow-up single. This track cemented her position as a creative force and it was played by listeners all over the world.
When Princess Nokia progressed to her next single, she used it to showcase her singing skills, not just her ability to rap. “Yaya” was well received by many of her growing number of fans. The title of the track is a Taino word meaning great spirit, which, the performer said at the time, reflected her ancestry in the Caribbean. After switching names to Destiny, she put out the popular mixtape Honeysuckle in 2015.
Electing to use the stage name of Princess Nokia, Frasqueri said that the name represented her alter ego. Fusing African drum patterns, jazz harmonies and electronica, Princess Nokia attempted to generate a new sound for herself at this time. Sometimes called alternative hip-hop by the music press, this style was very much in evidence on the performer's mixtape, Metallic Butterfly. After a hiatus in Ratking's performances, Princess Nokia began taking to the stage as a solo artist more and more. In 2017, she performed in the UK, including a charity gig that took place at Cambridge University.
