As the son of prolific Fluminese footballer Dondinho, it's fair to say that Edson Arantes do Nascimnto was born with the beautiful game in his blood. Growing up in extreme poverty in Brazil in the '40s and '50s, he was a keen footballer from his very early years, although he was only allowed to play if he went to mass and remains a devout Catholic to this day.

When Edson was nine, Brazil lost the World Cup, an event that traumatized the nation. He promised his father that one day, he would win the biggest prize in international football. Given the nickname Pele in his schooldays, his amazing natural talent helped him attract the attention of Santos soccer club, and the first goal of his professional career arrived before he was even 16 years old. In 1958, he cemented himself as a superstar at 17 years of age with he scored three goals in the 5-2 World Cup semi-final against France. He then went on to score two of Brazil's five goals in the final against Sweden. The rest, they say, is history.

After playing for Brazil for two decades, the boy wonder helped the country claim three World Cup victories and was named Player of the Century by FIFA in 1999.
