Nightwish - Endless Forms Most Beautiful
With new vocalist Floor Jansen at the forefront, Endless Forms Most Beautiful naturally sets down a marker. While boasting a less operatic voice than her predecessors, Jansen's background in rock bands ReVamp and After Forever gives considerable pedigree in the music world. Woodwind player Troy Donockley featured on the last two records Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum, but is afforded more freedom and scope to push the uilleann pipes to their limits now that he is a full member. Quite sensationally, Professor Richard Dawkins bookends the music with a speaking role at the open and close of the LP.
While the album introduces a new era for the band, it is their live performances that have most benefitted from this new lease of life. Famed for their pyrotechnic displays, it is the chemistry and energy between band leader Tuomas Holopainen and his comrades that delivers that extra something.Grab Nightwish tickets at StubHub to see these tremendous Finnish musicians for yourself.
Nightwish Biography - Opera Meets Metal
It's hard to imagine there would be much crossover between classical music and heavy metal, but this band beg to differ. Tuomas Holopainen founded the group in 1996 after playing keyboards for an assortment of hard rock acts, and his studies of classical, jazz and film scores gradually influenced their direction. While 1998 debut album Angels Fall First had acoustic and folk influences, Holopainen had a heavier sound in mind, encapsulated by second and third releases Oceanborn and Wishmaster, both of which were big hits in their native Finland.
The band's ambitious leader wanted to expand on this, and Century Child proved their making. With overdriven guitars bolstered by thumping drums, powerful piano and string arrangements, and a tremendous operatic female voice at its centre, the group quickly gained success across Europe. Floor Jansen became their third singer in 2012, after the departures of Tarja Turunen and Anette Olzon, but each leading lady has helped the group evolve their symphonic metal style and made the role their own. With their last six albums hitting the top spot in Finland, and having sold over eight million records worldwide, they have become one of their country's largest exports, and influenced numerous other acts to follow their path.
