New Pornographers Tickets
The New Pornographers: Indie Darlings of the Great White NorthSince 2000, talented indie acts from Canada have conquered the U.S. The Great White North invasion has included popular bands such as Arcade Fire and Sloan. But no Canadian band has made a bigger splash than The New Pornographers. Since their debut album, "Mass Romantic," a brilliant power pop classic, the quirky and talented band has been filling stadiums from coast to coast.
The New Pornographers are currently on tour in support of their latest album, "Brill Bruisers." Fans can find The New Pornographers tickets for shows in California, including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Pioneertown. Gigs are also scheduled for Nashville, Tennessee and Asheville, North Carolina. The New Pornographers are also heading to Europe for a handful of concerts. They will be playing London and Manchester in the UK, as well as Brussels, Belgium and Cologne, Germany.
Vocalist and lead guitarist Carl Newman came up with the name for the band after watching a Japanese film called "The Pornographers". Directed by Shoei Imamura, the 1966 film is a comic satire about small time gangsters and pornographers in post-war Japan. It is Imamura's most well known film outside of Japan. Music critics believed The New Pornographers took their name from Jimmy Swaggart's idea that "rock and roll was the new pornography", but Carl Newman and company have repeatedly dispelled that myth.
The New Pornographers formed in Vancouver, Canada in 1999. With fuzzy guitar hooks and lyrics that lean towards the strange and offbeat, the band is best described as an indie collective. While there are currently seven members in the Canadian super group, including alt-country superstar Neko Case, Carl Newman writes and produces most of the music. When NPR interviewed Newman about what makes a pop song work, the front man said, "I always bring up The Monkees, and it always comes off as facetious -but really, when I was a kid, I felt like hearing those Monkees songs made my heart open up. When I'm writing a song, there's part of me that wants to find that again."
The New Pornographers have had critical and commercial success since their inception. Music critics adored them from beginning. Blender magazine ranked The New Pornographers first album, "Mass Romantic," the 24th best indie album of time. "Mass Romantic" has been described as "a power pop classic." The album was originally released by the small Canadian imprint Mint, but was soon picked up by Matador, the leading giant of Indie music in the U.S.
The New Pornographers have released six studio albums and one live album, the latter of which is only available at concerts or the band's website. In 2003, the group followed up "Mass Romantic" with "Electric Version," which Rolling Stone ranked #79 on the list of the 100 Best Albums of the Decade. "Twin Cinema" (2005), "Challengers" (2007), and Together (2010) all achieved critical and commercial success. The New Pornographer's latest album, "Brill Bruisers," was released in August 2014.
The New Pornographers have a stellar music catalogue. Despite the solo projects of the band's many members, the group plays together with an intense and well-tuned mastery that comes only with a long career. The band's shows are both intimate and exuberant, and with several vocalists belting out lyrics their concerts have a family jam-band type feel. With so many well known and talented musicians in the band, the sense of competition takes the music to a higher level; the camaraderie between the musicians, and the musicians and the crowd, is one of the many things that make a New Pornographers show unique.
