Conductor Kazuki Yamada first helmed the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016 after guest conducting in 2011 and subsequently being appointed Principal Guest Conductor in 2013. The Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, or Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo as it’s known in French, has a long history and association with the Royal family of Monaco. Playing the majority of their concerts in the Auditorium Rainer III, named after Prince Rainer III, who was also responsible for one of the orchestra’s name changes. In 1953, Rainer II declared the orchestra to be named L'Orchestre National de l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo, before he then changed the name to the current Monte Carlo Orchestra. Further royal influence was seen in the appointment of Gianluigi Gelmetti as Principal Conductor in 2012, as Princess Caroline, the then president of the orchestra, made her presence felt.
