Metallica tour 2017: thrash metal legends to play five huge UK gigs this October in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham
With a place in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame; eight Grammy Awards; multiple number one albums in almost every major country worldwide; and global record sales of over 110 million, Metallica are one of the most commercially successful and influential bands of all time.
For more than three decades, the band's furious tempos, powerful instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship has helped Metallica reshape rock music in their own image and pioneer a new brand of metal known as 'thrash'. Albums such as Master of Puppets (1986) and The Black Album (1991) are among some of the most influential works in the history of rock music, while the band are also widely-regarded as one of the most entertaining live acts in the world.
After again thrilling crowds with a brilliant set of classics ("Seek and Destroy", "One" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls") and new material ("Atlas, Rise!", "Moth Into Flame" and "Confusion") across Europe and North America earlier this year, Metallica will now play five huge concerts in the UK this autumn to support their latest album Hardwired... to Self-Destruct. The lads will play two shows at London's O2, before calling at Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham before the end of October – meaning rock fans up and down the country will have a chance to see Metallica live. Metallica: one of the most successful and influential bands of all time
Gaining momentum in the early '80s thanks to an underground community of fiercely loyal fans, Metallica quickly became one of the most talked about bands in Hollywood. Despite their lack of commercial success at the time, the band's early albums – Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets – have all helped to shape the heavy metal scene through the decades since.
Upon its release, however, the electric Master of Puppets was well-received by both fans and critics and a huge commercial success; selling five million copies and being described as one of the most important – and heaviest – of all thrash metal records. The band's eponymous fifth album Metallica (AKA The Black Album) then helped the group appeal to an even wider audience; going on to become their first US number one. Load (1996) and Reload (1997) topped the charts around the world, before St. Anger (2003) briefly took the band in a new direction. The band hit the road again 2004, capturing the entire experience in the documentary feature Some Kind of Monster – a no-holds-barred look at James Hetfield and Metallica.
Another much-anticipated worldwide number-one album – Death Magnetic – followed in 2008 (five years after St. Anger) with the band touring almost constantly for the following eight years. The critically acclaimed Hardwired...to Self-Destruct followed in 2016 with the massive WorldWired tour starting just before release. Metallica will play five dates in the UK as part of the tour in October 2017; with tickets available to buy at StubHub.
