Schedule
Melanie is based in LA now, so appearances in this part of the world are extremely rare. However, we are lucky enough to have her swing past on her extensive European tour, where she'll be adding a little chic to the O2 Academy in London. It's a rare chance to get hold of some Melanie Fiona tickets, so go out and get two: one for you and one for your bae.
Trivia
Before making it as an artist in her own right, Melanie was linked to some of the biggest names in the musical universe. In 2005, she was part of a group called The Renaissance with an aspiring young Canadian rapper by the name of Drake. And before she started recording her own material, she sold songs to other established acts, including Rihanna, who recorded the song "Dem Haters" on her second album, "A Girl Like Me." She has also supported Kanye West on his US tours, and is good friends with Jay Z.
Singer
Taking her cues from artists such as Janet Jackson and Lauren Hill, Melanie has a distinctive vocal style that's incredibly powerful without being over-the-top. Soulful, elegant, passionate, she's delivered a series of award-winning R&B albums. Here in the UK she's still something of an underground figure, but any self-respecting fan of the genre will be familiar with her slow jams.
Breakthrough
Melanie is a figure who got to where she is by hard work and sheer talent. Her contribution was eventually recognised in 2010, when her beautiful ballad "It Kills Me" earned her a nomination in the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammys. Since then she has been nominated for most of the major awards in the genre. Melanie finally managed to win a Grammy in 2012 for her work with Cee-Lo Green on the track "Fool For You."
Hit Albums
Melanie's second studio album was entitled "The MF Life" and was a huge breakout hit in the US, where it reached number 7 in the Billboard charts, reaching number 1 in the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. It earned rave reviews from the critics, including glowing praise in Rolling Stone Magazine and an A- grade in the New York Times. The album was produced by T-Pain, and featured a number of big names guesting, including Drake and Nas. The lead single, "4 AM" dominated the urban music stations in the US for months, and follow-up "This Time" got a lot of attention, due to having some vocals by J. Cole.
Show Experience
Her licks may be super smooth, but Melanie is a firecracker when it comes to performing live. Accompanied by a full band, she likes to tear it up on stage and give the audience some filthy funk. Except reimagined versions of her back catalogue, reworkings of the songs she has written for other people, and covers of the greatest soul voices in history. Her live version of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" will blow your mind.
