Mayday: intense concerts and inspirational singles
Forming in 1997, five former high school friends – lead vocalist and primary songwriter Ashin (Chen Shin Hung), band leader and guitarist Monster (Wen Shang Yi), bassist Masa (Tsai Shen Yen), guitarist Stone (Shi Chin Hang) and drummer Guan You (Liu Yen Ming) – settling on the band name Mayday (after being known for a brief time as 'So Band').
Blurring the lines between alternative rock and pop, the group quickly came to represent Taiwan’s youth culture and became famous for their intense concerts and inspirational album lyrics. The band's debut record – Mayday's First Album – was a both a critical and commercial success; receiving positive reviews in the Taiwanese press and selling over 300,000 copies.
Sales of the group's subsequent albums – Viva Love and People Life Ocean Wild – consistently climbed, until a military call up for bassist Masa forced the band to take a three-year hiatus at the height of their popularity. Despite their time away, the band's fourth album was a runaway success, before multiple world tours saw them play sell out arenas in the USA, China, Malaysia, Japan and more.
In July 2016, Mayday released ninth studio album History of Tomorrow before announcing their Life World Tour, which kicked off on 18 March 2017 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Get Mayday tickets for their UK dates now at StubHub.
