He flourished under the supervision of Zakhar Bron and followed the teacher when he moved to both London and Lübeck. By this time, Vengerov was establishing himself as a world-class violinist: he won the Carl Flesch Competition in 1990 and was named Artist of the Year by numerous institutions, picking up Grammy Awards and Edison Awards along the way. In 1997, he was named as a UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador, the first classical musician to receive such an honour, and has travelled around the world in aid of his humanitarian work.
