Mandolin Orange Tickets
A band that first got going in 2009, Mandolin Orange is a folk duo based in the Chapel Hill area of North Carolina in the United States. The two members of the band are Emily Frantz, who plays the violin and the guitar, and Andrew Marlin, the group’s mandolin player. Marlin is the main songwriter of Mandolin Orange. As well as playing on the eight strings of a mandolin, he is an accomplished guitarist and banjo player. Both Frantz And Marlin sing lead vocals, often harmonising with one another in novel ways, which gives the pair a distinctive sound.
Marlin’s songwriting is original and this makes up the backbone of Mandolin Orange’s material. As well as some traditional tracks, the group’s self-penned songs are always performed in a folky style. In addition to Americana, Mandolin Orange also play bluegrass and country music. Some of the band’s poppier tracks have been praised for their gospel and rock influences by some music critics in the US.
Mandolin Orange's career milestones
Quiet Little Room, a work that came out in 2010, was the band’s first album. Showcasing Frantz and Marlin’s often virtuosic work on their respective stringed instruments, the album was warmly received by folk music commentators in their home country. The members of Mandolin Orange then embarked on a tour of America to promote the work. The following year, the duo returned with a new work, entitled Haste Make / Hard Hearted Stranger.
In 2013, the band was offered a recording contract with Yep Roc Records. Based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, the label is an independent with a strong roster of artists. Past and present musicians to have worked with the label include Paul Weller, Nick Lowe and Ryan Adams, among others. Sensing that the contract would help Mandolin Orange break into the mainstream, Frantz and Marlin signed the deal before them.
The first work to be produced by Mandolin Orange for their new label was This Side of Jordan, which came out in 2013. The band then set about another North American tour. Appearances at Austin City Limits and South by Southwest, both prestigious festivals in America, soon followed. Other notable gigs the band took on around this time include shows at the Newport Folk Festival and Merlefest. In 2015, Mandolin Orange unleashed a new album called Such Jubilee on the public. Blindfaller would follow in 2016. The band toured in Europe as well as North America at this time. In 2018, the duo returned to Europe for a string of dates in the UK, including gigs in Manchester, Sheffield and Nottingham.
