Irreverent music: a history of Macc Lads

Britain circa the 1980s became famous for Maggie Thatcher in politics and a burgeoning punk rock scene across the country. Hailing from Macclesfield, Cheshire, the Macc boys were a quartet determined to turn the punk landscape into their own personal playground en route to immortality. The late 70s gave rise to a subgenre of punk music known simply as "Oi!" It became used as a rallying cry for punks, working class youth, skinheads and other groups on the fringes of British society. Other groups experimenting with the "Oi!" sound were Sham 69 and The Business. Into this cauldron stepped the Macc Lads and thence began one of the most turbulent chapters in punk music history. With a repertoire of music that was considered highly offensive to the norms of British propriety, the group rejected any pretence of conforming to social or lyrical standards. Macc Lads discography gains new appreciation

"Beer & Sex & Chips n Gravy" - this was the title of the band's first album and it was clear from the outset that more than a few would be offended. This, of course, suited them right down to the ground. The band harboured no pretensions of topping charts or having platinum records. Instead it carved out a proud niche among football hooligans and the so-called yobs of British society. One famous critic once wrote that they were a "subversive parody of unreconstructed male bigotry", a brand roundly rejected by the band's founder. Implicit in many stereotypes is a kernel of truth, of course. The truth of the Macc Lads is that they were a bunch of rowdy, rude and often crude musicians who gained a following because their music carried weight with the disaffected of British society. Over time, what was once viewed as socially and musically unacceptable has been reviewed and re-appreciated within the anti-establishment historical context of both the band and its followers.
