Born Matthew Stephen Ward in October 1973, the earliest roots of M. Ward's music career can be traced back to Portland, Ore., after his college years. This is where his life journey as a musician took off. As a youngster, M. Ward loved to play his brother's guitar and used the Beatles' chord charts to teach himself. At the age of 15, he used an analogue tape recorder to tape his demo songs. He still uses the same recorder to record demo of his new songs. He was a part of the folk-rock trio Rodrigues for six years; this was where he learnt the nuances of the trade. M. Ward's first solo album, Duet For Guitars #2, was released in 1999 and was favourably received.
M. Ward's third album, Transfiguration of Vincent, was a breakthrough release that capture critical acclaim and was featured among the best albums of the year in 2003. This soulful album, set in old-time Americana, led the way to more evocative albums by M. Ward.
Following the success of Transfiguration of Vincent, M. Ward released his subsequent albums, Transistor Radio in 2005, Post War in 2006 and Hold Time in 2009. This was followed by A Wasteland Companion in 2012 and More Rain in 2016. With Post War, M. Ward started playing with a full band, further adding charm to his enigmatic music.
Apart from his solo albums, M. Ward joined American actress and singer Zooey Deschanel to form the pop duo She & Him. Their releases, Volume One in 2008, Volume Two in 2010, A Very She & Him Christmas in 2011 and Volume 3 in 2013 turned out to be top-selling albums.
Another joint venture that turned out to be fruitful for M. Ward was the super group Monsters of Folk he formed with Conor Oberst, Jim James and Mike Mogis. The four singers toured and played together at various venues to welcoming audiences, and their self-title album, released in 2009, peaked at No. 15 on Billboard's Top 200 chart.
Since his debut at the turn of the 21st century, M. Ward has impressed audiences with his focused performances, perfect acoustics and sentimental music. Oftentimes his live performance, accompanied by thunderous drummers and powerful guitar music, is miles away from the studio music you've heard from M. Ward.
