The building of a League Championship contender

American Major League baseball welcomed the Los Angeles Angles as part of its expansion program in 1961, when the team was owned by noted country singer Gene Autry. Since then, the club has gone through various new names and new stadiums on its way to creating one of baseball's most consistent teams. In 1962, the team left its Wrigley Field stadium to occupy the brand-new Dodger Stadium, which it shared with the Los Angeles Dodgers until 1965, when the team moved to a new home, Anaheim Stadium in Northern California and changed its name first to California Angels, then to Anaheim Angels. It was here that the divisional dynasty would be built, starting with the first in 1979, adding two more in 1982 and 1986, competing against opponents like Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers. The decade from 2000-2010 that witnessed the domination of the AL West Division was given considerable impetus by the remarkable 2002 season, when the Anaheim Angels blasted past the formidable New York Yankees in the Divisional Series and the Minnesota Twins in the League Championship series to contest its first World Series. The finale against the San Francisco Giants was an all-California affair, a 'Bay Area Series' where Anaheim would rally to win the final two matches in a seven-game thriller that featured outstanding performances from outfielder Barry Bonds of the Giants as well as Angel infielder Troy Glaus, who was named series MVP. The Anaheim Angels changed its name to Los Angeles Angels in 2016 and enjoys competitive rivalries with the Yankees, Rangers and the Dodgers.
