A production of the nonprofit Second Stage theater company, Lobby Hero returns to New York after 17 years away, moving this time from off-Broadway to Broadway. A complex yet simple humanist play, it was written by Kenneth Lonergan at the commission of Playwrights Horizon in 2001, 16 years before his winning the 2017 Academy Award for writing the film Manchester by the Sea. This latest incarnation of Lobby Hero in New York put some Hollywood heavyweights to work drawing out the play's central conflict of decent people facing ethical dilemmas.

A Whodunnit in Uniform

The action of Lobby Hero takes place in the lobby of a Manhattan apartment building where four people involved in an investigation into a murder wait for it to finish being carried out. There's an emotional rookie cop, her erratic partner, an ambitious security guard and his severe employer. Lobby Hero was directed by Trip Cullman (Unknown Soldier, The Rose Tattoo, The Pain of My Belligerence, The Mother, Choir Boy, Six Degrees of Separation, Significant Other) with support from set designer David Rockwell, costume designer Paloma Young, lighting designer Japhy Weideman and sound designer Darron L. West. The 2018 Broadway revival of Lobby Hero New York was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award as well as several Drama League Awards and Tony Awards. Those nominations have included Best Revival of a Play and Best Actor for Brian Tyree Henry and Michael Cera. In addition to its pair of New York runs, Lobby Hero also performed in London's esteemed West End from April through May 2002 and again from June through August 2002.
