Les Miserables is a landmark work of literature written in 1862 by Victor Hugo, a French novelist and poet. The story tells the tale of Jean Valjean, a Frenchman, who is caught stealing a loaf of bread and sent to prison for 19 years. He is eventually released on parole, but he breaks the parole in order to rebuild his life under a different identity. Disillusioned and hardened from performing hard labor in the prison camp, he attempts to find salvation after he inadvertently causes the sacking and death of a young woman while under his new identity. After giving his oath that he will search for and rescue her young daughter, he began a journey seeking forgiveness and redemption.
