If there is a chance to purchase La Bayadere tickets, the opportunity to see this exquisite ballet is certainly not one to be missed.
Plot
La Bayadere can be roughly translated to the "Temple Maiden" or the "Temple Dancer," and is set in India. In this epic love story, the two central characters are the lovely dancer Nikiya and the love of her life, Solor. Nikiya and Solor swear their fidelity to one another, only to have their world turned upside down shortly thereafter. The High Brahmin is in love with Nikiya and wants her all to himself, while the Rajah has decided that Solor will marry his daughter, Gamzatti. What ensues is a complicated drama in which the High Brahmin and the Rajah plot separately to break the lovers apart, all to tragic yet beautiful and poetic ends.
Schedule
The St Petersburg Ballet will be touring their production of La Bayadere in London at the London Coliseum for several dates, making it convenient for anyone interested to get tickets. From London, the company will continue traveling the world performing this classic, if not well-known ballet.
Trivia
Prima ballerina for the St Petersburg Ballet, Irina Kolesnikova, is world-renowned as one of the best ballerinas dancing today. She is currently performing both La Bayadere and Swan Lake with the St Petersburg Ballet, and touring the world along with the company. Interestingly, La Bayadere was originally written and choreographed for the St Petersburg Imperial Theatres' prima ballerina, Ekaterina Vazem, in 1877.
This ballet swiftly became a staple ballet in Russia, becoming a much-beloved classic. However, in the rest of Europe and especially in the United States and the Americas, the ballet went largely unnoticed for decades. The first performance of one scene of the ballet occurred in Brazil in 1961, and two years later, La Bayadere was performed by the Royal Ballet in London with the legendary Margot Fonteyn in the role of Nikiya.
Cast
In addition to the great Irina Kolesnikova in the lead role of Nikiya, Denis Rodkin of the Bolshoi Ballet will be performing the role of Solor. The remainder of the characters and corps performances will be performed by the St Petersburg Ballet Company.
Original Writers
The original creator and choreographer of La Bayadere is the prolific Marius Petipa. Petipa was a world-renowned French choreographer, dancer, and ballet teacher. Petipa worked in France but eventually moved on to do the bulk of his choreography in Russia and today is known as the original father of Russian ballet. Among his many accomplishments, Petipa was the original choreographer of not only La Bayadere, but also the Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty.
The music of La Bayadere was written by Ludwig Minkus, a composer from Vienna, Austria. Much like Petipa, Minkus made his way to Russia to compose music for ballets. He and Petipa actually collaborated on many different projects including Don Quixote and Nuit et Jour and many others. He also worked with the equally prolific choreographer, Arthur Saint-Léon on numerous occasions.
Producers
The London performances of La Bayadere are being produced by the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre.
