Klaxons Biography - Mind-Bending Mercury Winners
The group began as a trio in New Cross, London in the mid-'00s, where co-vocalists Jamie Reynolds and James Righton met bassist Simon Taylor-Davies through mutual acquaintances. Melding influences from '90s dance and club culture to contemporary indie templates, they birthed an exciting new sound dubbed New Rave by their record label. Releasing their debut single 'Gravity's Rainbow' in 2006, the threesome's head-spinning aesthetic proved a hit with critics and broadcasters, with NME and Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq championing their inspired innovation. After signing a deal with Polydor later in the year, their first major single 'Magick' hit the Top 40, paving the way for a Top 10 smash with the futuristic pop of 'Golden Skans' the following year. Their debut album, Myths of the Near Future, soon followed and crashed onto the albums chart at Number Two before scooping the Mercury Prize later in the year.
Adding session drummer Steffan Halperin as a full time member, the foursome returned rejuvenated in 2010 with sophomore LP Surfing the Void, pushing hard-rock guitars to the fore. With their third sonic experiment due for release in 2013, fans will be eagerly snapping up Klaxons tickets to hear the latest fruits of their envelope-pushing labours.
