Kishi Bashi's 21st-Century Pop Violin
Kishi Bashi is one of those artists with so many talents that it can be hard to believe he's real. With a gifted voice, a proficient command of electronics and live looping effects, and a gorgeous virtuosity on the violin, it's astounding that this magnetic performer is also the compositional voice and songwriter of all his unbelievably catchy pop songs. Hearing his albums is a wonderful experience but to witness him single-handedly performing these complex songs live is something you have see to believe.
Schedule
Kishi Bashi has an extensive tour of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Continental Europe coming up. He's playing shows in cities including Dublin, Glasgow, Bristol, London and Brighton, before crossing over into France, Germany and The Netherlands for dates in Paris, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and more. He'll then return to The United States with shows in North and South Carolina.
Trivia
In addition to his original songs and his prominent role as a violinist with bands including Of Montreal and Regina Spektor, he has also made a name for himself as a reinterpreter of classic pop and rock songs. He's covered bands including Talking Heads, ELO and Beirut. Some of the covers are compiled on the Joyful Noise released "7" Box Set" but many of his covers are special moments at his concerts.
Singer
Kaoru Ishibashi, who goes by the slightly altered stage name of Kishi Bashi, came to prominence as a touring member of Montreal and Regina Spektor, as well as one of the original members of synth-rock group Jupiter One. Born in Seattle, Washington, he grew up in Virginia where he studied classical violin. He cut his teeth performing for years as a touring violinist with a variety of bands before embarking on his much-acclaimed solo career. In addition to writing and performing his own songs, he also records and produces his albums himself. He's garnered comparisons to the indie-rock sensation Andrew Bird and Owen Pallett, who formed the quirky and popular Montreal-based band Final Fantasy.
Breakthrough
Kishi Bashi left Montreal to begin recording and performing with his solo project in 2011. Kishi Bashi quickly garnered attention, with particularly effusive praise coming from Bob Boilen of NPR's All Songs Considered. He named Kishi Bashi one of his favourite artists of 2012 and called his music "radiant" and "uplifting." Microsoft's use of the single "Bright Whites" in their ad campaign for Windows 8 brought Kishi Bashi's music to millions of people and led to a major spike in his popularity. Since then, his star has continued to rise, with noted performances at festivals including SXSW and Austin City Limits.
Hit Albums
Kishi Bashi's debut album was 151a, which came out with Joyful Noise Records in 2012 and quickly began receiving radio play. His masterful performance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts in support of the album went viral. His 2014 second full-length album, Lighght, reached No. 52 on the Billboard Top 200.
Show Experience
Kishi Bashi does not use backing tracks for his masterful one-man live performances of his multi-layered tracks. Rather, he uses live looping, including beatboxing and contrapuntal violin lines, to establish the musical texture of his songs. He is able to play violin and sing harmonies at the same time. Bringing such musical genius to the performance of his songs, it's clear that he's an act that must be experienced live. He's popular among pop, indie rock, classical and folk fans, so Kishi Bashi Tickets go fast.
