Kenny G Biography - Virtuoso Saxophone Star
Born in Seattle, Kenneth Bruce Gorelick first picked up a saxophone at ten years of age and was playing professionally for Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra by 17. He continued in bands Cold, Bold and Together and The Jess Lorber Fusion whilst studying for a degree in accounting at the University of Washington, but signed with Arista Records in 1982 as a solo artist. He found instant success with his self-titled debut and with second and third album G Force and Gravity respectively - both of which were certified platinum. His real breakthrough came in 1986 with fourth album Duotones, which charted at number six in the Billboard 200 and spawned hit single 'Songbird' and 'Don't Make Me Wait for Love', which he would later go on to perform live with Michael Bolton.
In 1992, Gorelick co-wrote the soundtrack to iconic film The Bodyguard and released sixth album Breathless, which included the Grammy Award winning track 'Forever in Love' and sold 15 million copies worldwide - making it the highest selling instrumental album ever. Another career highlight came in 1997 when after holding an E-flat note on the saxophone for 45 minutes and 47 seconds, he found his way into the Guinness Book of World Records. Gorelick's status was such that in 2000 he was invited to play for the Clinton Cabinet at the White House, and his popularity continued well into the decade, bringing out 11th album I'm in the Mood for Love...The Most Romantic Melodies of All Time to become the 25th highest selling artist in the US in 2006. He experimented with an R&B sound in 2010 with Heart and Soul, collaborating with Robin Thicke on the track 'Fall Again', earning nomination for another Grammy Award and peaking at number one on the US Billboard Jazz charts. With 14th studio album Brazilian Nights arriving in 2015, Gorelick is all set to take the new material on tour, with select dates in the UK planned for 2016.
