German comedian Kaya Yanar was born and raised in Frankfurt to Turkish immigrant parents, but despite his multicultural upbringing Kaya admits he doesn’t have a great grasp of the Turkish language. Kaya knew from a young age that he wanted to make people laugh, telling his school teacher he wanted to grow up to be a comedian – at which his teacher laughed! While he may have always known what he wanted to do, comedy took a while to become Kaya’s main career, as the stand-up decided to go to university and study American Studies, Phonetics and Philosophy first. Fortunately for his career, he dropped out before graduating to focus on becoming a comedian. If you’re looking to buy or sell Kaya Yanar tickets, StubHub is your one-stop shop. A one-man comedy show
The German comedian is probably best known for his hilarious one-man comedy sketch, "Was Guckst Du?!". Meaning "What are you looking at?!" in English, it brings stereotypes of East Indian and Turkish cultures to the stage. Kaya is very keen on bringing his own multicultural influences into his comedy, with his funny Indian character, Ranjid, having become a major hit in Kaya’s live performances. He also parodies Turkish immigrants and their way of speaking Pidgin English, which is based on his own family and the experience of learning languages himself. Kaya is not the first stand-up comedian hailing from Germany to achieve great international success, joining his fellow countrymen Henning Wehn, Dieter Nuhr and Mario Barth in being globally recognised as one of the finest comedians of the 21st century.
His further projects
Not only does Kaya Yanar bring socially uncomfortable topics to light through his comedy, but he is also dedicated to bringing the issue of racism to the surface and tackles it with his wonderful acceptance of multiculturalism. Kaya celebrates his own heritage and has brought this focus into schools, becoming a figurehead for the project "Schule ohne Rassismus – Schule mit Courage", which translates as "Schools without racism – schools with courage", and has been successfully adopted by schools since 2012. Kaya also sits on the jury for the German comedy contest "Comedy Grand-Prix", which seeks to find the next best comedy talents in Germany.
