Musical Influence All Around
Out of Memphis, Tennessee, Julien Baker could not escape the historic musical influence of this great city. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, countless founders and pioneers of American music genres, from Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash to Aretha franklin and Otis Reading, would catch their break in Memphis. In the more modern era, the city would be home to artists such as Justin Timberlake, academy award winners Three 6 Mafia and of course, Julien Baker herself. Learning to play her father's guitar from an early age, it's not hard to imagine her wealth of musical influence growing up. After studying audio engineering at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro and later majoring in Literature with a double minor in Spanish and secondary education, Baker would hit the road and make music her full-time profession. An Early Rise to Success
In 2010, aged just 15 years old, Baker co-founded a band called The Star Killers, which renamed itself Forrester in 2015. It wasn't until her freshman year at Middle Tennessee State University that she began to write solo material in a serious way, mostly in her dorm room or the university's practice rooms late at night. An EP was formed, which she recorded with a friend at Spacebomb Studios in Richmond, Virginia. This would later become the full-length album Sprained Ankle, a critically acclaimed project that would earn features in The New York Times and The New Yorker. With an ever-growing profile, Baker has opened for well-established acts and artists such as Death Cab For Cutie, Belle and Sebastian and Paramore. By 2017, Baker had signed with Matador Records and released her second album, Turn Out The Lights, recorded at Tennessee's Ardent Studios, on 27th October 2017. On 28th October (the very next day!), she made her US TV debut. How's that for a hectic schedule? There's clearly something about this girl from Memphis! Drift away with the naked folk sounds and exquisite vocals, with Julien Baker tickets now available to buy and sell via StubHub.
