Julian Cope – a plethora of music projects

Julian Cope was born in Wales in 1957 and first became involved with music at school when he participated in his high school musicals. He has had a rich musical career, which has included several bands and projects. In the early days, he joined forces with Ian McCulloch and Pete Wylie from Pete Wylie & the Mighty Wah to form the short-lived band Crucial Three. Though this project lasted only 6 weeks, each of the members eventually had a successful music careers playing for different Liverpool bands. In 1978, Julian Cope formed The Teardrop Explodes, a band that had a 5-year life span and released two post-punk and psychedelic albums. He moved on to a solo career following the band’s break up, and has since released over 30 albums. His debut album, "World Shut your Mouth", reached the top 40 in the UK in 1984, and the song of the same name was a big success, reaching the top 20 in both the UK and Ireland. Some of his other hits have included "Charlotte Anne", which went to number 1 in the United States in 1988, and "Beautiful Love", which reached the US top 5 in 1991. Julian Cope also worked on a number of side projects throughout his career, such as forming anarcho-folk band Black Sheep in 2008.
