Mixing the traditional with the contemporary
Joshua Burnside first caught attention in 2013 with "If You're Goin' That Way", an EP which blended elements of traditional Americana and Irish folk with the contemporary sounds of fractured beats, vocodered vocals and looped electric guitars. He then took four years to follow it up but the wait proved to be worth it. Following the release of EP "Blood Drive", Burnside was nominated for the Northern Ireland Music Prize with his full-length debut album, "Ephrata", which featured guest appearances from post-classical artist Rachael Boyd and Hozier backing vocalist Alana Henderson. The record was not only championed for its intriguing range of sounds, but also for its diverse subject matter, with Burnside tackling everything from technophobia to post-traumatic stress disorder across its ten well-produced tracks. Burnside then added to his discography in 2018 with the "All Round the Light Said" EP and a deluxe edition of his debut featuring previously unreleased demos, live performances, acoustic reworkings and remixes. Compared with Paul Brady and Paul Simon
Blessed with a hypnotic voice that's been compared to fellow Northern Irish troubadour Paul Brady and a finger-picking guitar technique reminiscent of Paul Simon, Joshua Burnside makes for a captivating live performer. The singer-songwriter shines whether performing solo with his guitar and array of effects pedals or with a three-piece backing band who helps to fully flesh out his inventive and innovative folktronica sound. Fans should look forward to hearing several highlights from his back catalogue, including the BBC 6 Music-championed debut release which put him on the map, "Black Dog Sin", and the singles "A Man of High Renown", "Holligram", "Tunnels Pt.2" and "Blood Drive", the latter of which almost he performs almost entirely a cappella. Burnside also regularly pays tribute to the artists who have inspired him while performing live, with John Martyn's "I Don't Wanna Know" a particular favourite.
