Jon Allen: Picking Up Where Dylan Left Off
The folk scene has exploded in popularity in recent years thanks to the success of Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers, and Laura Marling. Rising up behind those acts was British singer-songwriter Jon Allen, a singer who is relighting the troubadour torch once carried by the likes of Bob Dylan and James Taylor. Allen's albums have been hot in the UK, and this puts his live shows in high demand.
Schedule
Allen lives in London and focuses his touring primarily on the UK, touring in places like Whiskey Sessions in Victoria Warehouse and The Stables in Milton Keynes. Additionally, Colston Hall in Bristol, The Jazz Cafe in London and The Cellars at Eastney in Southsea have all had the pleasure of hosting him. Keep an eye on the tour schedule as dates can appear suddenly and sell out nearly as fast. When you see them, get Jon Allen tickets as quickly as possible to catch a revival of '60s folk with modern passion.
Trivia
The '60s earthy sound to Allen's music may arise from his unconventional early education. Allen was a student at a progressive school that allowed students to take classes in the homes of parents. It was in one of these home sessions that Allen found a drum kit and began experimenting. He took to the drums much faster than he did the violin. His violin aspirations were abandoned after one lesson when the teacher asked him to play with his right hand when he was actually left-handed.
Singer
Jon Allen began seriously experimenting with music as a teenager when his collection of both instruments and recording equipment grew. He put off pursuing a professional music career to attend university, but after graduation, he became a part of the burgeoning London folk music scene.
Allen eventually became an in-demand live performer and gig player. That exposure, combined with a circulating demo, was enough for Allen to attract a producer for his debut album. Unable to afford production for a full album, Allen instead focused on releasing a strong single.
Breakthrough
The single "Going Home" took off in ways nobody could have predicted. BBC Radio 1 championed the song with heavy plays, and Land Rover decided to use the tune in the background of a frequently aired commercial. Online downloads of the song based on those promotions gave Allen enough money to finish producing his first album, 2009's Dead Man's Suit.
Hit Albums
Allen promoted his debut album with performances on BBC Radio 2, Later...With Jools Holland, and BBC London TV. Dead Man's Suit went on to reach No. 139 on the UK Albums Chart and produced another popular single, "In Your Light".
Followup album Sweet Defeat shot to No. 8 on the UK Breakers Chart, No. 27 on the UK Alternative Chart and No. 196 on the Albums chart. Popular singles "Joanna" and "Last Orders" received radio play and earned Allen a place performing at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival on the stage in the BBC Lounge.
Allen's 2014 album Deep River hit No. 2 on the Breakers chart, No. 16 on the Alternative chart and No. 126 on the Album chart. The album continued Allen's streak of positive reviews and he continued to grow a loyal audience of fans.
Show Experience
Don't go to a Jon Allen show expecting mosh pits or high-pitched screams of teenage girls. Shows are intimate, instrumental conversations between musician and audience. Oh, and all are welcome to sing along. Securing Jon Allen tickets will give you the chance to see stripped-down '60s folk music in action, which is a hard thing to find in modern times.
