John Prine's history
A couple of performances at open-mic events at The Fifth Peg in Chicago was all John Prine needed to land a $1,000 a week gig at such venues as The Earl of Old Town and The Bulls. It was a fortuitous turn of events that led Prine to even perform in the first place. Shortly after Prine had returned from his mandatory army duties, he was heckled at The Fifth Peg for his grumpy outlook towards local talent. He was challenged to deliver a better performance, and the rest, as they say, is history.
John Prine's biggest hits
The country stalwart's career, which has continued for more than 50 years, is dotted with several seminal works, such as his debut album that received widespread critical acclaim. While the eponymous album didn't fare very well on the charts, it got Prine rave reviews from key industry figures, including Bob Dylan.
Prine's first tryst with commercial success, though, came in 1975 with Common Sense, which broke through Billboard 100. Perhaps Prine's biggest commercial success is his 1991 effort The Missing Years, which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. The album sold upwards of 250,000 copies and featured performances by Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.
Other notable works by John Prine include Bruised Orange, Pink Cadillac and Fair and Square. Fair and Square won a Grammy in 2006 in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category.
Some of his most popular songs include "Sam Stone", "Sweet Revenge", "Hello in There", "Please Don't Bury Me", and "Saddle in the Rain".
