Enter the mystical world of the Mahavishnu
Hailing from Yorkshire, England, John McLaughlin started playing guitar at the age of 11, and after a stint as a blues musician, he decided to form his own band in 1968, releasing his first album, "Extrapolation" one year later. Ever seeking to broaden his musical horizons with a keen interest in the spirituality of sound, McLaughlin moved to New York City, where he would come to the notice of jazz legend Miles Davis, who invited him to be part of the ensemble that recorded the seminal album "Bitches Brew" in 1970. John McLaughlin, along with Al DiMieola, Lee Ritenour and Paco De Lucia, is one of the best-known fusion jazz guitarists in the world. In 1971, John McLaughlin formed one of the most acclaimed jazz bands in history, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, partnering with Jan Hammer and drummer Billy Cobham among others, and they would go on to record a series of albums that redefined the genre, including "The Inner Mounting Flame" and "Birds of Fire", which showcased his lighting speed on 'doubleneck' electric guitar. Passion, Grace & Fire of John McLaughlin
In 1974, McLaughlin reformed the Mahavishnu Orchestra with musicians Jean-Luc Ponty and Narada Michael Walden after recording "Love Devotion Surrender" with Carlos Santana, with whom he shared the same spiritual guru, and the new incarnation released "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" later that year. Passionate about Indian classical music and instrumentation, he formed yet another group, Shakti, in 1974 to explore his acoustic style, creating three more studio albums in the process, including "Natural Elements" in 1977. Over the next two decades, McLaughlin would form various other bands and collaborate with several highly touted jazz musicians, such as Mitchel Forman, Dexter Gordon and Kai Eckhardt, and the new millennium would continue the extraordinary range, variety and volume of projects and recordings from "The Believer" in 2000 and the solo effort "Industrial Zen" in 2006 to "Five Piece Band Live" with Chick Corea in 2009. The breadth, depth and scope of his contributions to the world of jazz music is undisputed and he has influenced countless musicians over the span of his 50 year professional career.
