Hospitality's Jangly Pop Hits the Sweet Spot
Led by Amber Papini's smart indie girl vocals, Hospitality brings that indie pop joy to even darker themes explored on their latest album, "Trouble". They may sound sweet on the surface, but scratch a little deeper and you'll find music and lyrics that defy convention and speak to a generation wondering what it all means.
Schedule
Hospitality tickets are the prize to grab as the band is nearly always found on tour supporting their latest releases. They're known for making U.S. tours that take them all over the country, making stops in New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, L.A., and more. These up and comers earn new fans and respect with every show, so don't miss them while they're still on the way up.
Trivia
Singer Amber Papini and drummer Nathan Michel are more than band mates, they're also married. Amber's sister Gia was in the band during it's earlier stages, but left after getting married herself. Outside the band, Papini teaches 2nd grade, while Michel bangs out solo electronic recordings for labels Tigerbeat 6 and Tomlab. Growing up, Amber was a big fan of indie music on labels like Matador and Merge, so when Hospitality signed with Merge for its debut album, it was a dream come true.Band
Currently based in Brooklyn, Hospitality formed when Papini met Michel at a party in New Haven, Connecticut and bonded over music. They soon moved to New York and hooked up with bassist Brian Betancourt, and a sound was born. They released their debut self-titled EP in 2008 and immediately scored notice with a "Band to Watch" article on Stereogum. After taking some time away for side projects, Hospitality returned to the studio for their first full-length album, also self-titled, released in 2012. They followed that up with a sophomore LP, "Trouble", in 2014, which preserved the band's catchy effervescent sound while dabbling in darker lyrical themes.
Papini's lyrics speak to that restlessness we all have in reaching adulthood and not quite knowing what to do with our lives. Her song, "Right Profession", is about being stuck in a safe career while dreaming of something else, and "Liberal Arts" is for all you English Literature types who'd rather do anything than get a business degree. With the upward trajectory of the band, Papini and Co. should be able to focus solely on their music.Breakthrough
The band's breakthrough came early, just a year after forming. It went down when a producer, Karl Blau, heard one of their sound checks and offered (on the spot) to record some of their songs. Hospitality jumped at the chance, and soon came out with their 2008 self-titled debut. In addition to the Stereogum mention, the four-track EP also got positive reviews in several other publications and attracted the attention of Merge Records, who signed them for their debut LP.Hit Albums
Their first LP with Merge came out in 2012, and was cheered by their fan base and critics alike. High-profile publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork sang their praises, with Rolling Stone eventually ranking it 32nd in the year's top 50 albums. 2014 saw the release of their second album, "Trouble", which again received excellent reviews as critics praised it for expanding their sound palate and being generally awesome.Show Experience
You'll see a four-piece band in an intimate setting with lead singer/guitarist Amber Papini cooing sweet, intelligent vocals like your indie pop crush come to life. The rest of the band are all accomplished musicians, with Brian Belancourt bringing virtuoso bass stylings and Nathan Michel switching between multiple instruments, all backed by a tour drummer. Their live sound has more kick than their studio work, as they trade synth arrangements on their albums for a more rocking live set. Hospitality does more to live up to their name; it's music that says "welcome," and "stay a while"."Back to TopSign-up to receive the latest updates, exclusive offers and more!
