Hermitage Green are currently on tour in the UK, bringing their dynamic sound to several cities in Ireland, as well as to The Garage, one of London's most revered live music venues.
Over half the members of Hermitage Green were accomplished athletes before making the band their full-time occupation. Darragh Graham was a world-class sprinter, for which he holds several Irish titles. Graham twice narrowly missed sprinting in the Olympics, due to injuries. Dan Murphy holds an All-Ireland kickboxing medal, as well as the 2012 light heavyweight Munster boxing title. Barry Murphy excelled during a ten-year career as a professional rugby player, winning two Heineken cups and two Magners league titles; he played for Munster as well as Ireland, until retiring due to injury. Dermot Sheedy has a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
Hermitage Green is fronted by principal songwriter Darragh Griffin, who also sings and plays guitar in the band. A lifelong musician, he began learning piano at age six, and studied classical and Irish folk music at university. Lead vocal duties are also shared by Dan Murphy, who plays guitar, Dobro and harmonica as well. Bass player Barry Murphy also contributes lead vocals. Other members include Darragh Graham (banjo, djembe, backing vocals), and award-winning percussionist Dermot Sheedy on bodhran. The band began as a causal outlet for friends to share and explore their musical interests and ideas, but they soon developed the tight, professional Hermitage Green sound their fans have come to love today. Band members cite a wide range of influences, including Lisa Canny, Damien O'Kane, Kila and Gerry O'Connor, John Martyn, Nick Drake, Mick Flannery, The Staves and Lau.
In September 2012, two years after forming, Hermitage Green made their breakthrough with the release of their debut EP, "The Gathering," which quickly rose to the top of the charts at iTunes. A year later, in November 2013, they released their first long-playing album, "Hermitage Green (Live at Whelans).
Hermitage Green (Live at Whelans)" features twelve songs performed in front of a live audience at the famed music venue Whelans, located in Dublin, Ireland. The album captures the instantly recognisable live sound for which Hermitage Green has become so famous, and includes fan favourites such as "Gibson," "Golden Rule," "Aisling" and "Cloud 9." It also showcases the diversity of the group, from the lush a cappella vocal harmonies of "Teardrop," to the upbeat, rock 'n' roll liveliness of "Florida," to the exotic slide Dobro and banjo arrangement that introduces "My Little Friends.
Hermitage Green put on a well-paced and engaging show that invites audience members to dance to the upbeat numbers, sway to the ballads and, as in the call and response chorus of "Golden Rule," to sing along with the band. Given the warmth and appreciation with which they interact with their fans, and given the striking variety of sounds and colours they are able to pull out of a handful of acoustic instruments and five voices, it's no wonder that Hermitage Green sell out so many of their shows.
