Hans Zimmer Biography - Creating Musical History From The Lion King to Interstellar
Growing up in West Germany, Hans Florian Zimmer began playing the piano at a young age, modifying it with various apparatus, including a chainsaw, to create an alternative sound. In the '70s, he worked with bands like The Buggles, Krisma and Helden before partnering with film composer Stanley Myers to found the Lillie Yard, a recording studio in London. They would go on to collaborate on scores for films like My Beautiful Laundrette before Zimmer went solo, performing a production role on the Academy Award winning score for The Last Emperor in 1987. A career defining moment came the following year with the music for Rain Man providing a previously unheard mix of synthesizers and steel drums to illustrate the unworldliness of protagonist Raymond Babbitt's situation.
His success continued in the early '90s with iconic compositions for Driving Miss Daisy, Thelma Louise and The Lion King. The latter would go on to win an Academy Award, two Grammys and a Golden Globe, before later being adapted into a Broadway musical - which also claimed a Tony Award in 1998. Working alongside acclaimed director Ridley Scott, he created to music for Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and Hannibal in the early '00s and, impressed with his work, Jerry Bruckheimer approached the composer with a request to provide the music for three of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Other notable works in this period include The Last Samurai, The Da Vinci Code and Sherlock Holmes, followed later by work on Christopher Nolan's films Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, collaborating with James Newton Howard.
Electronically manipulating 'Non, Je ne Regrette Rien', he created the suspenseful music for 2010 film Inception, revealing he looked to make something simple but iconic and memorable. With further great work on the Academy Award winning 12 Years a Slave, The Amazing Spiderman 2 and more recently Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, he's acquired a great number of fans in his own right. 2016 sees him tour Europe for the first time, with a full live orchestra playing a selection of his greatest hits.
