Hamilton is the smash hit musical from the mind of Lin-Manuel Miranda. Based on the 2004 biography by historian Ron Chernow, the musical tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton. From his humble birthplace in the Caribbean town of Charlestown, Hamilton would become a Revolutionary War veteran, an esteemed political theorist, America’s first treasury secretary and the architect of the nation’s early economic system. His death at the hands of Vice President Aaron Burr is one of the most notorious acts in American history. The musical includes the hit songs "My Shot," "The Story of Tonight," "Cabinet Battle #1," "Cabinet Battle #2" and "The World Was Wide Enough." The cast album that accompanied the musical sensation spent more than 150 weeks on the Billboard charts, a rare milestone in the history of musical theater.
Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story
Lin-Manuel Miranda conceived of the idea for a mixtape based on Chernow’s biography after the success of his 2008 Broadway show In the Heights. He previewed the first song of the mixtape during a performance at the White House Evening of Poetry in 2009, but it took another five years to develop the mixtape into a full musical. Once finished, the musical made its debut at The Public Theater on February 17th, 2015. Hamilton premiered on Broadway several months later on August 6th and became an immediate sensation. It has grossed more than $500 million, making it one of the top musicals of all time. To match its financial success, Hamilton also became one of the most well-recognized musicals in history. It is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Edward M. Kennedy Prize and the Kennedy Center Honors. At the 2016 Tony Awards, the Broadway production received 16 nominations, winning for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography. Leslie Odom, Jr., Daveed Diggs and Renee Elise Goldsberry all took home acting awards as well. The West End production, which debuted in 2017, won seven Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music.
