Grimes Biography - Experimental Electro Superstar
Born Claire Elise Boucher in Vancouver, Canada, the singer took on her pseudonym after stumbling across its associated genre online - despite being completely unaware of the link to the UK rap scene. She began to produce her own music while studying neuroscience at university in Montreal, and playing live at Lab Synthese, a performance space started with a group of friends and the site of Arbutus Records. Debut album Geidi Primes was released in 2010, with sophomore effort Halfaxa following only a few months later - both unusually on cassette format. After signing with record label 4AD in 2012, she dropped her third LP Visions. Featuring the massive singles 'Oblivion' and 'Genesis', the record was hailed as one of the year's best by a number of music publications, and was named among NME's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Work on a fourth studio album was a long process due to the high standards the artist demanded of herself. In 2014, she premiered 'Go' on Radio 1, a collaboration with Blood Diamonds and a drastic departure from her previous sound. However, feeling the musical direction wasn't right for that moment in time she cancelled the upcoming album. Fans prepared for similar when she released the one-off song 'REALiTi', but critical reaction was universally positive, auguring well for fourth album Art Angels. Single 'Flesh Without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream' proved her right to delay until she was happy with her work, and her latest record is a real return to form.
